  1. Welcome to Adobe Photoshop(TM) version 2.5.1 software for the Windows(TM)
  2. environment. The Adobe Photoshop Getting Started Guide contains most
  3. of the information you need to install and run Adobe Photoshop. This
  4. Read Me file contains last-minute product information and updates to
  5. the Adobe Photoshop user documentation, including:

  18. SCANNER SUPPORT
  19. Adobe Photoshop supports all scanners that are 100-percent compatible with
  20. the TWAIN specification for image acquisition. In addition, some scanner
  21. manufacturers provide acquisition plug-in modules that interface directly
  22. with Adobe Photoshop via the Photoshop(TM) plug-in specification. For
  23. information on setting up your scanner to work with Adobe Photoshop, see the
  24. user guide and your scanner documentation. If your scanner manufacturer did
  25. not include a TWAIN source module or an Adobe Photoshop direct plug-in
  26. module, contact the manufacturer directly. Following is a list of

  44. If your scanner doesn't work with Adobe Photoshop, please contact the
  45. scanner manufacturer to get the latest firmware and/or the latest driver
  46. for your scanner.
  47.  
  48. There is a problem with the Mustek hand-held scanners and small amounts of
  49. conventional memory. If you have less than 400Kb of conventional memory
  50. available prior to starting Windows, the Mustek scanners will report an
  51. "Out of Memory" error. To alleviate this problem, remove some of the device
  52. drivers and/or TSRs (Terminate and Stay Resident programs) from memory by
  53. editing your config.sys file. Refer to your DOS manual on how to do this.

  55. ABOUT THE JPEG MODULES
  56. The JPEG modules in Adobe Photoshop require that the system have at least two
  57. megabytes of virtual memory. The virtual memory can be provided either by a
  58. temporary or permanent swap file in this case, but as discussed above,
  59. permanent is recommended.
  60.  
  61. On systems with large amounts of memory (64Mb or more of RAM), the JPEG
  62. Modules may fail to load due to a bug in the Watcom 386 compiler. Lowering
  63. the amount of memory allocated to Adobe Photoshop (use the Memory...
  64. in the File/Preferences sub menu) should alleviate the problem.

  66. ABOUT PATHS
  67. Adobe Photoshop 2.5.1 now supports Tiff 6.0 previews for its EPS files.
  68. This allows clipping paths to become visible when placing an EPS file in
  69. software supporting the Tiff 6.0 previews for EPS files. There have been
  70. implementation problems in some software that show the clipping paths with
  71. a non-transparent mask. If you experience this problem, please call your
  72. software's Technical Support.

  74. USING PRESSURE-SENSITIVE TABLETS 
  75. Adobe Photoshop supports only pressure-sensitive digitizing tablets that
  76. are 100-percent compatible with the Microsoft« Pen Windows specification.

  86. ABOUT VIDEO COLORS
  87. While you can use Photoshop with video cards that support only 16 colors,
  88. it is highly recommended that you chose a video board that supports at least
  89. 256 colors. For the best results, a video board that supports 24-bit color
  90. is recommended.

  92. ABOUT CMYK SEPARATIONS
  93. When using printers that support Adobe PostScript Level-2 software, the 
  94. printer itself has the ability to do CMYK separations. Normally, Adobe 
  95. Photoshop does the CMYK separations. If you want the printer to do the
  96. CMYK separations rather than Adobe Photoshop, you must disable the CMYK
  97. separations option.

  99. If your printer's PostScript Level-2 software supports an internal method of
  100. color separating, you may choose to disable the Adobe Photoshop software's
  101. CMYK separations by doing the following:
  102. 1. Open the PHOTOSHP.INI file located in your WINDOWS directory.
  103. 2. In the [Adobe Photoshop] section of the PHOTOSHP.INI file, add the
  104.    following line with no spaces and capitalization exactly as shown:
  105.  
  106.         DISABLERGBTAGS=1
  107.  
  108. 3. Save the PHOTOSHP.INI file and restart Photoshop to see the change.
  109.  
  110. ABOUT VIRTUAL MEMORY COMPRESSION
  111. By default, Adobe Photoshop uses virtual memory compression when swapping
  112. image data to disk. This feature allow Adobe Photoshop to use less disk
  113. space but there is a tradeoff in performance. Disabling this feature will
  114. cause Adobe Photoshop to use more disk space but to have better overall
  115. performance.

  117. To disable virtual memory compression option: 
  118. 1. Open the PHOTOSHP.INI file located in your WINDOWS directory.
  119. 2. In the [Adobe Photoshop] section of the PHOTOSHP.INI file, add the
  120.    following line with no spaces and capitalization exactly as shown:
  121.  
  122.         DISABLEVMCOMPRESSION=1
  123.  
  124. 3. Save the PHOTOSHP.INI file and restart Photoshop to see the change.
  125.  
  126. VIDEO DRIVER INCOMPATIBILITIES
  127. If you are experiencing problems with the way your images look, please refer
  128. to the Troubleshooting section in the Getting Started Guide.  Please be sure
  129. you have the most up-to-date drivers before reporting problems to Adobe's
  130. Technical Support. You can contact your video card manufacturer for
  131. information on how to receive the most recent driver. The following are a
  132. list of video cards that are known to have incompatibilities with Adobe
  133. Photoshop.
  134.  
  135. - Video cards that are based on the Weitek P9000 video chip set have shown
  136.   problems when using the marquee or cropping tools. To work around this
  137.   problem, make the selection and then force a screen redraw (close and
  138.   open the window or zoom in and then out).
  139.  
  140. - When using the Prodesigner II card in 256 color mode, there are problems
  141.   when using Indexed Color mode. There are also problems in most modes when
  142.   blending from black to white.
  143.  
  144. - The 9GXi and 9GXe cards are known to be incompatible with Adobe Photoshop.
  145.   If you are experiencing problems using either of these cards, get the most
  146.   up-to-date drivers and try again. If the problems persist, you may need to
  147.   use a different video card in your system.
  148.  
  149. - The Orchid Fahrenheit 1280 & VLB sometimes experience problems when
  150.   displaying Pantone«* colors in some video modes. If you experience
  151.   problems, update your drivers and/or try a different video mode to see
  152.   if the problem is resolved. The VLB may also have problems with the 
  153.   redrawing of the brushes palette when Adobe Photoshop initially starts up.

  155. PRINTER DRIVER INCOMPATIBILITIES
  156. Some printer drivers, most specifically the unidrv.dll driver, can
  157. occasionally cause Adobe Photoshop to crash when printing bitmap images on
  158. HP« printers. If you are having difficulties printing to HP printers, try
  159. converting the image to grayscale first and then printing it.

  161. DISK COMPRESSION SOFTWARE  INCOMPATIBILITIES
  162. It is recommended that you assign Adobe Photoshop scratch disks to an
  163. uncompressed disk. There are incompatibilities between the Adobe Photoshop
  164. virtual memory and compressed disks. If you encounter problems using Adobe
  165. Photoshop when the program or scratch disks are on a compressed disk,
  166. then move the program and/or assign the scratch disk to an uncompressed
  167. disk.
